Between 2022 and 2024, the Association des Médiatrices Interculturelles (AMIC) in Geneva initiated a "Lectures Alternatives" project in collaboration with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, the Museum of Ethnography in Neuchâtel, the Museum gruérien in Bulle, Marisa Cornejo Studio (Geneva) and the Institute of Ethnology at the University of Neuchâtel.

The project consisted of a series of artistic workshops and visits to the three museums, with the aim of

  • Promote cultural diversity (people from here and elsewhere) by including other points of view and other types of knowledge in the interpretation of permanent exhibitions in three Swiss museums.
  • Offer interpretations that reflect the diversity of our daily lives
  • Use museums as meeting places, facilitating exchanges and bringing together people from different backgrounds.

Through sound and visual interpretations of works presented in the permanent exhibitions, this project multiplies the worlds within the museum, opening up new possibilities of identification and self-representation for a wide audience.

We invite you to discover Giulia Cilla's Cartographies affectives et identitaires and Cristina Da Silva's Les chemins at the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, Igor Denegri's Entendez-vous l'écho? and Marisa Cornejo's Rêves sans frontières at the Museum of Ethnography in Neuchâtel, and François Burland's Swiss Again at the Museum gruérien in Bulle during the restitution of the Lectures Alternatives project on June 15, 2024. Admission is free. Program:

  • 2pm-4pm: presentation of the projects and discussion between the participants of each project. Sound bites and visual productions will be on display.
  • 4pm-6pm: Drinks and a concert of Eritrean music.

AMIC defends a fair, equitable and harmonious society by promoting the inclusion and autonomy of refugees and migrants in Geneva society.

AMIC's mission is to welcome and facilitate the integration of refugees and migrants in the canton of Geneva, by developing projects, actions and services that meet the needs of refugee and migrant women, families and children.

To implement its vision and mission, AMIC offers a diverse range of services organised into 6 areas: reception, information and guidance; support and accompaniment; socio-cultural activities; parents and children; promotion and expertise; sponsorship and godparenting. The Association caters for women and families, as well as young refugees and migrant children living in Geneva.

The "Lectures Alternatives" project (2022-2024) run by the Geneva-based Association des Médiatrices Interculturelles (AMIC) is being developed as part of and financed by the "Nouveau Nous" program. It aims to bring new readings to the art objects presented in the permanent exhibitions of three Swiss museums: the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, the Museum of Ethnography in Neuchâtel, and the Museum gruérien in Bulle. The project is being carried out in collaboration with Marisa Cornejo Studio (Geneva) and Katarzyna Grabska, visiting professor at the Institute of Ethnology at the University of Neuchâtel.

This work of alternative readings will be carried out through a series of artistic workshops offered by artists living in Switzerland with local and foreign (migrant) populations, combined with museum visits. The workshops and tours will question their objects and spaces critically, opening up interpretation beyond traditional museum expertise.
